Priests from three religious faiths officiated and a Bollywood star witnessed at a mass wedding for 53 couples in a Sri Lankan detention centre for displaced Tamil people.
Sri Lankan Tamil Bishop Thomas Savundaranayagam has visited the civil war’s final battlefield for the first time since the fighting ended, and said rebuilding lives and churches in the area was an “unbearable burden” on the people there.
Tamil refugees are slowly returning to their villages six months after fighting ended in the country’s 26-year civil war. But many are returning to find their homes ruined and are seeking refuge in damaged churches.
The government says it is finally speeding up the resettlement process, UCA News reports.

“There is a serious risk that the crimes committed by the government in Sri Lanka will be forgotten”, said Fr Jeuist Santhanam after a seminar held this week in Madurai in the Indian State Tamil Nadu, on the situation of the Tamil population in Sri Lanka.
