Priests violated children’s human rights: Pope thumbnail

Addressing a conference on protecting children, Pope Benedict has warned that the church must keep its guard up against those who violate their rights.

While the church’s mission was to protect minors, “unfortunately, in different instances, certain of its members went against this commitment and violated rights,” Pope Benedict said in a speech to members of the Pontifical Council for the Family that was posted on the Vatican Web site.

“The Church will continue to deplore and condemn such behavior,” the pope said.

Addressing conference participants, Benedict acknowledged that “unfortunately, in a number of cases, some of its (the Church) members acted in contrast to this commitment”, Reuters says.

The violation of rights of children by priests is well and truly documented but one needs to remember it's the Holy See that has been complicite in covering it up. These men have been done no favour in preventing them paying for their crime and receiving the help they needed just to prevent scandal. No they have been moved from place to place and their superiors hoping the issues would go away under instructions from Rome. It's all very well to deflect the blame onto them alone. In September last year the International Humanist and Ethical Union made submissions to the United Nations to bring the Holy See to account on sex abuse issues and how they were handled much to the shame of all Catholics or should have been.
To think the Vatican went as far as approaching the White House to claim diplomatic immunity.
Uniformed Catholics is a sad thing, hopefully that will no longer be the case. We have to be aware of what is being done in our name to retain some form of credibility for our Church our familiies and society.
The faceless disconnected illigitimate children of Priests throughout the world is another issue for the Holy See to take account of, another breach of rights and unalienable ones at that.
