Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak wants the Allah row to be settled through negotiation rather than through the courts, a local newspaper is reporting.
The Malaysian Insider says it understands the prime minister wants the dispute settled out of court, and Cabinet Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jala is key to talks which would to allow the restricted use of the word, a solution that could satisfy both Christians and Muslims.
Appointed last year to Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s Cabinet to spearhead the Government Transformation Programme (GTP), Jala is now the point man as the government seeks to find a solution the “Allah” dispute.
Jala, along with other personalities, understood to include Attorney-General Tan Sri Gani Patail, are now holding dialogues with Christian groups to find a way out of the seeming impasse.
Najib is understood to be concerned with the Christian vote his Barisan Nasional (BN) may lose, especially in its traditional vote bank of Sabah and Sarawak.
In the Sarawak interior, the issue is understood to have gained some traction.
Jala’s Kelabit tribe, which also uses the word “Allah” in its bible, have become particularly upset by remarks made by some West Malaysian Muslim leaders and with the government’s stand.
“Yes we are trying to find a moderate path, to find a national consensus on the issue.
“It is not easy because of the opposing forces. But I believe they (Christians) see our sincerity. They realise we are not playing politics,” Najib said in a televised interview.
Plans are now afoot for Najib to meet with Kuala Lumpur Archbishop Tan Sri Murphy Pakiam to hammer out a solution in the form of proper guidelines on how the word “Allah” can be used, the Malaysian Insider notes.
