Rockhampton Bishop Brian Heenan is visiting India this week to find priests who would consider moving to Australia’s central Queensland region, owing to the drop in the number of local young men choosing the priesthood.
Bishop Heenan said there are a number of reasons why young Australians have not been interested in taking up the priesthood, the ABC reports.
“In today’s age, recompense or high wages are a factor,” he said.
“Young people also like to go and take up many of the professions that are available to them. The other thing, too, is celibacy - that if one offers himself for the priesthood, it’s seen as a commitment to remain single so that the person can give themselves completely to the mission.”
